Life is not as spontaneous these days as they were in our youth but today was different. Bettysue was looking at the computer early in the morning and said, "hey, look at this - wanna go?" "OK", I said and we showered and shaved and off we went. We thought that we might need binoculars (we didn't know how far away we would be), and seeing that we were intending to get some anyway, in preparation for an upcoming trip to Sri Lanka, we went a little out of our way to make these purchases before the long drive to Reno. Reno - well not much to say about this place. We have never really been attracted to the environs in Nevada and Reno, the biggest little city, is not our idea of fun. We found a Motel 8 directly across from the University campus and checked in to a non-smoking room that smelt of sweetened chemicals instead of smoke. So despite the approaching frigid temperatures we opened up the window and door and aired the place out for awhile. Motel-schmotel .... we read, watched tv, found a cheap dinner and went to bed early. After all - we had an early start to prepare for. 3:30am found us up and about and searching for breakfast. This Reno, land of 24hr everything and by 4:00 we were scoffing down french toast and eggswith an Irish coffee chaser. What the heck, it's cold outside, let's have another Irish coffee. By five o'clock we were ambling over to the campus to join the short line assembling outside the arena. Us flatlanders had forgotten the chill in the air at this time of year and couldn't wait for the sun to rise in the clear sky - must have been close to freezing! At 7:30am the sun had risen and we were now being allowed in to the arena and so followed the 50 - 60 people in front of us and were in turn followed by the thousands behind us. We were still cold but right up at the front where we remained for maybe another 2 hours, slowly shedding some layers of clothing as the sun rose higher. Excitement was mounting along with the pain in my lower back from standing in a tiny area with no room to stretch. Invocation, pledge of allegiance, nation anthem - we were under way. Oh no - what's this? 3 students doing a skit!?! As it turned out, it was quite amusing but not worth driving across state for. And then, a loud chant, " O_BAM_A, O_BAM_A", and we were shouting as loud as any of them. There he was , right in front of us, not more than twenty feet away, and it started to rain. No - not rain but my face was wet. OMG - they're tears streaming down my face. Tears of joy, of hope. We are going to get out of this mess - there is another road to go down - one that leads to a healthy environment for our children and grandchildren, a recovering economy, a world where our young people don't have to go off needlessly and be killed in some foreign land or come back crippled, and a country that takes care of it's less fortunate, the elderly, the poor, the disadvantaged and those with special needs. Here in front of us was the hope. Not the Messiah - our burden is for us to fix. But here was our leader (hopefully) and our inspiration. There was nothing new in his speech, I had heard it in some form or another before, but never like this. It was so awesome!! After his speech he came down and shook our hands - not just ours, I mean, he didn't single out me and Bettysue, but he shook our hands! It wasn't like a hand I had shaken in a long time - I don't think he pounds nails or tosses around 2 x 4's - smooth and cool. And then he was off - to some other venue to awe and inspire like he had done here. It was so worth it!!!
